The Environment Committee of Pennard Community Council have agreed unanimously to support the Plastic-Free Pennard initiative. Councillors will work with volunteers from the community to encourage local businesses and organisations to commit to moving away from single-use plastic within the ward and fund any supporting resources from the Environmental Projects budget (subject to remaining within the set budget).

Pennard Area Community Partnership (PACP) is an organisation within the community of Pennard that operates on a charitable basis to take ideas within the community forward. They have agreed to investigate the feasibility of putting on the first event, making use of the "Night Out" scheme, putting in place a process for a team of individuals to take over and turn this into a regular activity - even if it's only twice a year!

Tree Planted
The Tree planting ceremony took place on November 30th 2017 at the entrance to Pennard Primary school and car park. It was attended by Gwen Watkins, Vernon's widow as well as members of the local community, Pennard Community Councillors, Gower Unearthed, The Gower Society, the AONB, Pennard Library, children from Pennard Primary and members of the Vernon Watkins community. The tree was blessed by the Rev. Nigel King and Gwen Watkins read one of Vernon's children's poems aloud. It was a beautiful and fitting tribute to Vernon and it was a pleasure and a privilege to be in attendance. The tree is to be accompanied by a memorial stone in the New Year. This will commemorate 50 years since the passing of Vernon Watkins, along with the 50th anniversaries of Pennard Primary and Pennard Library. The stone will be funded by donations from The Gower Society, the Gower Landscape Partnership, Pennard Community Council and VocalEyes.org.

Pennard Primary have agreed to find a suitable site for the tree to be planted. It is hoped this will be in a patch of land outside the school entrance and therefore accessible by members of the community and those with an interest in Vernon Watkins.
