Professor Peter.J. Sloane, Swansea University, Ian W. Li, University of Western Australia, Mark Harris, Curtin University have had their paper “Vertical, Horizontal and Residual Skills Mismatch in the Australian Graduate Labour Market’” accepted by the Economic Record.

Professor Sabur Mollah’s co-authored book (with Abul Hassan) has been accepted for publication by Palgrave Macmillan, the book is entitled Islamic Finance: Ethical Underpinnings, Products, and Institutions

Dr Sam Burville has had a publication accepted by the Journal of Small Business and Research Development, entitled Reconceptualising the Principles of Penrose’s (1959) Theory and the Resource Based View of the Firm: The Generation of a New Conceptual Framework

Dr. Wei Song has had a paper accepted for the 2018 Financial Management Association (FMA) Annual Meeting in San Diego, USA. The paper, " General managerial skills and corporate social responsibility", was co-authored with Jie Chen and Xicheng Liu

On 17 April, Dr Robert Bowen presented a paper Consuming Place: Towards a regional logo for promoting Welsh food at the Corfu Symposium on Managing and Marketing Places held by the Institute of Place Management in Corfu, Greece.

Dr Bowen has also been invited to participate in an expert seminar on After Brexit: 10 Key Questions for Rural Policy in Wales, organized by the Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University and the Centre for Welsh Politics and Society/WISERD@Aberystwyth at Aberystwyth University on 3 May. He will be presenting and discussing his work on the impact of Brexit on the food and craft industries in Wales, which is related to a paper he recently submitted to a 3* journal. Additionally, Dr Bowen has had two papers accepted for future conferences:

In April 2018, Professor Sabur Mollah presented a paper co-authored with Asma Mobarek and Marc Goergen at the British Accounting and Finance Association Annual Meeting in London. The paper was entitled Board Quality and Stock Return Synchronicity in Large Banks

Furthermore, Professor Mollah has also had a paper accepted paper for the Financial Management Association (FMA) International Conference Annual Meeting in San Diego, USA. Research Excellence:

Research by Professor Sasha Talavera, and PhD student Tho Pham from the School of Management, in collaboration with Yuriy Gorodnichenko, Professor at University of California, Berkeley, suggests that information automated software agents or "bots" were used to spread either "leave" or "remain" social media stories during and after the Brexit referendum which drove the two sides of the debate further apart. This research has been picked up by the media and Sasha and Tho have been interviewed by the following media outlets: BBC England, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Scotland, Bloomberg, Reuters, NY Times, NPR, The Economist, Business Insider, Dutch Public Broadcaster, AFP, Washington Post, The Guardian and Wall Street Journal. Professor Nick Rich has had his 4* paper, which will support a REF impact case study, entitled The Social Benefits Of Kaizen Initiatives In Healthcare: An Empirical Study accepted for publication.

The Paper, Discrimination, social capital, and financial constraints: The case of Viet Nam by Professor Sasha Talavera and Tho Pham (School of Management PhD student) has been accepted for publication by World Development (3* ABS). This research was supported by UNU-WIDER Research Grant.
 
Dr Nick Hajli and his colleague Professor Mauricio S. Featherman from Washington State University, USA, have published an editorial article for their special issue of The impact of new ICT technologies and its applications on health service development and management at Technological Forecasting & Social Change (ABS 3*).

Professor Alan Hawkes has been working with Dr Maggie Chen (formerly of Swansea SoM but now in Cardiff Mathematics Department), Professor Enrico Scalas and Mailan Trinh at Sussex University, and three colleagues at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, USA. Professor Sasha Talavera presented a paper, Social media and public opinions: Evidence from #Brexit and #USElection, jointly written with Yuriy Gorodnichenko (UC Berkeley) and Tho Pham (School of Management PGR student) at the 15th Annual Media Economics Workshop in Barcelona.
 
Professor Nick Rich and Helen Howson of the Bevan Academy presented the evaluation report for the Bevan Exemplar programme to the efficiency committee (headed by Andrew Goodall) and it was very well received. They are working on the evaluation of cohort two.

Dr Rob Bowen presented a paper at the annual conference for the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) in Belfast. The paper was entitled: Location Effects on Agri-food SME Internationalisation: Comparing Wales and Brittany. Dr Rob Bowen was also co-author on another paper presented at the conference by Wyn Morris from Aberystwyth University: Product Differentiation and Access to Markets: A stakeholder perspective of Welsh Lamb
 
Recent research on self-employment, financial development and well-being by Professor Sasha Talavera (AF, Hawkes Centre), Tho Pham (AF PhD Student) and Mao Zhang (Sheffield) was highlighted by voxukraine.org web-site, a leading internet media outlet in Ukraine.

Both Dr Nripendra Rana and Professor Yogesh Dwivedi were invited to attend a Newton Fund Researcher Links Workshop on “Developing an agenda for FinTech research in emerging economies”, which was jointly organised by Loughborough University and University of Malaya. The workshop was held from 31 October – 2 November 2017 at Le Méridien, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Professor Dwivedi delivered the following two invited (as a mentor) talks in this workshop: (1) A Profile of current FinTech research; and (2) Structuring and writing a research article: guidance for FinTech researchers. Both Dr Rana and Professor Dwivedi also chaired sessions and contributed to an interactive panel on “Navigating academic careers in Malaysia and UK – challenges and opportunities”. The workshop provided an ideal opportunity to collect data for developing a direction setting research article on this theme, which they intend to do (within next few months) jointly with Professor MN Ravishankar from Loughborough University.

From there, you will be able to select one of the Research Integrity courses best suited to your discipline and/or research interests. Once line manager approval is obtained, the training may be completed via Blackboard.

NPTC Group of Colleges' would like to make students aware that there is now a free ATM cash machine in the refurbished A/B Block (6th Form Academy Hub) located next to the main reception area.

In response to your suggestions on the VocalEyes platform a new cash machine has been placed on the Neath college site.  

Please remember we consider all of your suggestions and ideas and will also be considering placing additional machines on other campuses if there is a demand and high usage.

Promotional Video (starting in 2 weeks)

A video to highlight the good features and positives (e.g school council, facilities, innovation etc) of our school to show to both students and parents of feeder primary schools. Also we wanted to show in the video the different  activities transpiring in our school such as the sports competition and the transition programme 
Ideas and views
  1. Inclusion of the school values preferably at the beginning and/or end 
  2. Talk about the amount of time spent on dedication to activities such as basketball training 
  3. Include the variety of clubs available during and after school e.g science club 
  4. The impact of pupil voice on the school, possibly bring up the change of uniform 
  5. Voice overs with the images of the clubs in the background 
  6. The standard and improvement of grades in the school as well as the progression 
  7. Mention the extra language and other GCSEs taken by pupils
  8. Introduction by the headteacher

Dr Naveena Prakasam, Dr Louisa Huxtable-Thomas and Dr Paul White have had their paper “Reddit: Affordances as an enabler for shifting loyalties” accepted at the 34th EGOS Colloquium 2018 in Talinn, Estonia.[Sub-theme: 02: Understanding Organizing in Terms of Digital Media Technology: Histories, Presents, Futures].

Professor Sasha Talavera, Dr Mo Tian,  Huasheng Xiang (PhD student, Accounting and Finance) had their paper “Price dispersion in Online Betting Markets” accepted to be presented at the Royal Economic Society Conference 2018, University of Sussex, 26th-28th March 2018.

Dr Cara Reed has been invited by the journal Management Learning (ABS 3*) to do a publishing workshop with their joint editor-in-chief Prof Emma Bell at The Organization Learning, Knowledge and Capabilities (OLKC) Conference on 25th April 2018 in Liverpool University.

Dr Cara Reed has had her paper “The Generation Game: Foucault’s bio-power in action” accepted to be presented at 2018 34th European Group for Organizational Studies Colloquium, 4-8 July, in Tallinn, Estonia.

Professor Yogesh Dwivedi was invited to contribute to a panel on “Participation, Engagement and Empowerment – the Role of Digital Governance and Civics” in 11th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance, which was held in Galway, Ireland, April 4-6, 2018. The conference was jointly organised by National University of Ireland Galway and United Nations University - Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance (UNU-EGOV). The panel included Professor Viswanath Venkatesh from the University of Arkansas, Professor Atrey Kankanhalli from National University of Singapore, Professor Hiroko Kudo from Chuo University Japan and Dr. Murray Scott from National University of Ireland Galway.

Dr Hawazin Alzubaidi (one of our recently completed PhD students), Dr Emma Slade (The University of Bristol) and Professor Yogesh K Dwivedi have received Best Working Paper Award (2nd Prize) at the 3rd International Conference on Marketing, Strategy and Policy organised by Newcastle University London Campus. This award was received on the work entitled “Consumers’ pro-environmental behaviours in Saudi Arabia: Extending the TPB with innovativeness and materialism”, which was presented by Professor Dwivedi on 10th April.

Other News

Gary Walpole has recently had a report on the “Circular Economy practices of Small to Medium Enterprises in South Wales” commended by Welsh Government, the report will inform policy makers initiatives to encourage SMEs to adopt CE practices.  The report is being revised for submission to an academic journal.

Voting took place earlier this month in our first online AGM.

Hi everyone!

Thanks very much for all of you have submitted, rated and commented on ideas so far on My Voice. We have had loads of really great ideas and have been working hard to start conversations and get the ball rolling on many of them by working in partnership across college departments and help you influence change! Some ideas have been easy to implement but some take some time and we are working hard to make sure your voice is heard. Here are where we are with some of your ideas that we've decided to take forward and form part of our Student Partnership Agreement.

Fairer Absence System - We looked into this and found that not all students are aware of what support is available to them through the existing college policies and we will be working to make sure these are more widely promoted. NUS are currently working to review the process and City SA will support them in this to ensure the fairest system is used.

Longer Opening Hours - We worked with staff in the library to extend library opening hours from 7pm to 9pm Monday to Thursday. These extra two hours are not staffed, but the spaces are still open to students. We hope to see earlier opening hours and weekend times extended in the future.

No Taught Classes in Open Spaces - The college have agreed that the open classrooms should not normally be used for traditional lectures. These rooms are to be used for break out spaces, group work, project work and self-directed study. We are forming a working group to review the timetabling process and implement rules for room usage with the hope the spaces will be used more effectively.

Staff Teaching Qualification Requirements - The College offers a programme for all teaching staff to complete formal teaching qualifications while working at City and most staff will have achieved this within their first two years in their roles. The idea was discussed further at the Student Representative Council where it was discussed that industry experience, attitude, enthusiasm and motivation was more important than a standard teaching qualification. We have decided to introduce student-led Teaching Awards in academic year 18/19 to allow students to nominate those who display best teaching practices in various different ways.

MyCity App - MyCity will be under a renovation over summer and the IT department are looking into introducing a new system called Canvas which is more mobile native and so things like timetables and documents would be more accessible on mobile devices. Stay tuned for more updates on this.

Language Classes - CitySA are liaising with relevant staff in the languages department within the college to look into the possibility of running language classes and offering e-learning materials for students to improve their language skills and increase employability. 

Cheaper Printing - You felt that you were given insufficient funds on your print cards this year. We are working with IT to review how the funds are decided and distributed so it is fairer for all students. Additionally, we are going to remind lecturing staff that all essential course materials should be printed using the college print room by staff and distributed to students and that students should not be using their personal allowance for this.

In association with Surfers Against Sewage, Pennard ward are holding a Big Spring Beach Clean at Pobbles on Saturday 7th April 2018. The meeting point is 2pm at the National Trust Hut at Pennard Cliffs car park. 

This beach clean forms part of Pennard's commitment to achieving Plastic Free Coastline accreditation this year.

As far as possible, litter picking equipment will be provided but it is advisable to bring your own gloves if possible.

Centre for Migration Policy Research Seminars

Cross-disciplinary seminars at Swansea University, hosted by the Centre for Migration Policy Research (http://www.swansea.ac.uk/cmpr/ ) and funded by the College of Science. These seminars target some of the key contemporary issues affecting our world such as “deportation”, “containment”, “visibility”, “control”, “flight”, “risk”, “fear”, “management”, “resistance” and “mobility”. These seminars critically engage with the global political challenges, linked but not limited to the field of migration. Every session will last for half a day, on average consist of three presentations and focus on one notion, unpacking its current uses, tracing its genealogy and addressing theoretical and critical points that its use raises. What is Participatory Budgeting?

It is a process of democratic deliberation and decision-making, and a type of participatory democracy, in which ordinary people decide how to allocate part of a budget. Community members identify spending priorities.

What does that mean and how does it work in Pennard?

In Pennard, we are taking part in the Swansea Rural Community Voice Project. This is community engagement in a way that has never been done before. This project gives every resident the opportunity to have their say on facilities, amenities and ideas for positive change they'd like to see within their community.

The Project makes use of a digital platform, www.vocaleyes.org. Here, residents who register are able to rate and debate suggested ideas for change in the community. The process is anonymous so it affords residents the opportunity to be honest and brave and anyone can add an idea for the rest of the community to decide if it's a priority or not. This provides a list of priorities for the community that in turn, informs elected representatives, such as the ward Councillor or Community Council, where there is a need. It also provides opportunities for members of the community to come together and bring about positive change themselves.

As a further commitment to this Project, Pennard Community Council have increased the Environmental Project fund to £5000 for the 2018/19 financial year. This is visible under the "Budgets" section of the VocalEyes platform. As ideas are rated, the top rated ones become priorities. Where appropriate, the Community Council will allocate funds to these priorities to help them become a reality. These transactions will also be visible to all on the platform. 

As you can see, your voice can really make a difference in Pennard. Don't let others direct where the money is spent, make sure you have your say on positive changes you'd like to see in your community.

Your Students' Association have been working in partnership with Baxter Storey over the past few months, providing them with your feedback and ideas! We received over 200 ratings for ideas relating to more vegan, vegetarian and food intolerance options

Baxter Storey have now introduced more food options and products for students with specific dietary requirements. Please ask a member of the Catering staff for what options are available and they'll be able to point them out to you.

Dr Carl Cater has recently taken on the role of Chair of the School Ethics and Governance Committee. Carl joined the School in September 2017 to take up an Associate Professorship in Marketing; he is an experienced researcher with an active interest in the ethical aspects of research design and governance, and has published a number of articles and reports on the implementation of ethical training and oversight in higher education institutions.

Congratulations to Ellen Spender. She was awarded her MSc Accounting & Finance award, with distinction, at our Winter degree ceremony last month.

Congratulations to our School Careers Team who were shortlisted in the Best University Careers/Employability Service in the National Undergraduate Employability Awards 2018. The award was sponsored by Microsoft and the ceremony took place in London on 23rd February 2018.

Dr Kim Cuong Ly has been awarded a University of Glasgow, Adam Smith Business School prize for PhD excellence. This has been awarded on the basis of the excellence of her PhD thesis and the significance of its contribution to her field of study. The value of the prize is £1000.

Professor Yaw Debrah has had his paper ‘Institutional Legitimacy, Cross-Border Trade and Institutional Voids: Insights from the Cocoa Industry in Ghana’ accepted for publication in the Journal of Rural Studies (ABS 3*)

Further output from Professor Steve Cook's continuing pedagogical research on widening participation has been accepted for publication by Studies in Higher Education (ABS 3*).  The article is part of a joint project with Duncan Watson (UEA) and Rob Webb (Nottingham).

Professor Yogesh Dwivedi, Dr Nripendra Rana and Dr Hatice Kizgin have a special issue proposal (on Advances in Theory and Practice of Digital Marketing) accepted by the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services (https://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-retailing-and-consumer-services), which is also coedited by Dr Emma Slade from the School of Economics, Finance and Management, University of Bristol, UK and Professor Nitish Singh from the School of Business, Saint Louis University, USA. This special issue is linked with a workshop that will be held in the School of Management on 10th of July 2018. The Call for Papers is attached for further information about this special issue. Prof Dwivedi, Dr Rana and Dr Kizgin would be happy to discuss if anyone is interested in developing a paper for consideration in this special issue.

Professor Yogesh Dwivedi recently founded a Springer book series on Advances in Theory and Practice of Emerging Markets (http://www.springer.com/series/15802). The first volume (entitled: Service Quality in Indian Hospitals: Perspectives from an Emerging Market) of this series has now been published. Further detail about this volume is available at http://www.springer.com/gb/book/9783319678870. The second volume of this series (entitled: Emerging Markets from a Multidisciplinary Perspective Challenges, Opportunities and Research Agenda; coedited by Dwivedi, Y.K., Rana, N.P., Slade, E.L., Shareef, M.A., Clement, M., Simintiras, A. and Lal, B.) will be published by April/May 2018 (http://www.springer.com/gb/book/9783319750125). This volume has been developed from the contributions from EMaRC Workshop, which was held in 2017 at the School of Management. Further volumes are under development. 


Dr Hany Abel-Latif’s article “When you’re stuck in quicksand, stop kicking” based on an ongoing research project in collaboration with Prof. Mahmoud El-Gamal from Rice University, USA, appeared this month on the Forum (the Economic Research Forum ERF policy portal). In this research-based policy article, the authors build on the findings of their paper “Financial liquidity, geopolitics and oil prices”, and argue that investing in megaprojects (known as Vision 2030) in a number of countries in the MENA region is not the best way to transform these economies in time of low oil prices.

Conference, Committee, Workshop and Seminar Invitations

Dr Dario Debowics has had his paper ‘A Study on Altruistic and Electoral Income Redistribution: Theory and Data’ accepted to be presented at the Royal Economic Society Conference 2018 at University of Sussex on 26th-28th March.

Dr Kim Cuong Ly was invited to present at a seminar at Heriot-Watt University on “Do banks adjust their liquidity to cope with environmental variation? A study of bank deregulation”, co-authored by Yuxiang Jiang (University of Leeds) on 22nd January 2018.

Dr Kim Cuong Ly has had her paper “Pecking order hypothesis under negative investment environment”, co-authored by Professor Katsutoshi Shimizu (Nagoya University, Japan) accepted to be presented at the Royal Economic Society Conference 2018 at University of Sussex in March.

Professor Steve Cook's recent pedagogical research into evidence-based learning has been accepted for presentation at the upcoming HEA Annual Conference in July 2018.  The work arises from a joint research project with Duncan Watson (UEA) and Rob Webb (Nottingham).

Dr Elaine Forde has been invited to the Max Planck Institute of Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany to present a paper about her Energy Anthropology Research at an International Colloquium in May.

Dr Brian Varian’s paper 'The economics of Edwardian imperial preference: what can New Zealand reveal?' has recently been accepted to be presented at the Economic History Society Annual Conference at Keele University in April and at the Britain and the World Conference at the University of Exeter in June.

Dr Brian Varian’s paper 'Protection and the British rayon industry during the interwar gold standard, 1925-31' has recently been accepted to be presented at the World Economic History Congress at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in August.

Dr Carl Cater and PhD students Rhiannon Rees (SoM) and Olga Garcia (Aberystwyth University) attended the International Adventure Conference in Segovia, Spain in early February https://www.adventureconference18.com. The International Adventure Conference is the forum for members of the Adventure Tourism Research Association, set up by Dr Cater and colleagues in 2013 (www.atra.global ). Rhiannon presented her work in poster format on “Information sources and consumer behaviour in travel: An investigation of destination activity choice in a multi-channel digital age”, whilst Dr Cater and Olga presented their findings from Olga’s PhD examining ocean literacy strategies for scuba divers in Mallorca. The conference was based at CENAM, the Spanish centre for environmental education, in the beautiful Sierra de Guadarrama mountains just north of Madrid, near the historical town of Segovia. Despite snow and sub zero temperatures (in Spain!), delegates were able to engage in a range of exciting interactive workshops as well as the usual excellent academic presentations. https://www.facebook.com/adventuretourismresearchassociation/

Professor Sabur Mollah has received 175,000 Malaysian Ringgit (Approx. £32,000) from Taylor's University Flagship Research Grant under the following project:

Dr Kim Cuong Ly has recently been awarded FY2018 JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan (Short-term) to conduct a research visit in Japan under the leadership of the host institution, Nagoya University on the project "International comparative analysis of corporate financing behaviors". (Under this funding scheme, 95 applications were received, among which 15 fellowships were awarded across different research categories. The selection ratio is 15.8%).


REF Cycle

We have completed the 2017 Mini REF cycle and will soon be starting the next one. Those with active Impact Case studies have been asked to update them by the end of this month; Dr Louisa Huxtable-Thomas is leading on this for the School.  The next output Mini REF needs to be completed by the end of July, so please continue to upload papers onto RIS and complete Open Access requirements. Professor Steve Cook is leading on this for the School and more details will follow when we have them from the University.

The University is also planning to complete an Environmental Mini REF by June 2018 and Professor Yaw Debrah is leading on this for the School.

The £13.5million open innovation project AgorIP – which is hosted at the School of Management is now online. AgorIP is a new approach to innovation which can help bring ideas and innovation to life.

Thanks to EU and Welsh Government support, AgorIP is a Swansea University project which is helping academics, clinicians and innovators realise the potential of their idea, product or research. The AgorIP team which is based on the first floor of the School of Management has now launched its new website www.agorip.com.

AgorIP is led by Swansea University’s Head of Commercial Services Dr Gerry Ronan.

Dr Ronan said: “The team is made up of technology transfer managers and officers who work to support inventors, researchers, clinicians, academics to take their IP to the marketplace and help make it a commercial success. The project is working to capture, protect, develop and commercialise ideas, inventions or innovation.

“Swansea University is now in the top 8 for UK universities for creating spin-out firms and we firmly believe the AgorIP project will help sustain this growth.

“We have had more than 200 inquiries, of which 90 projects have now been funded. I was delighted to present the project to our Swansea University Court last month and the warm reception the project and its aims received.”

AgorIP provides support to NHS, academia and industry along with new and existing enterprises, including multinationals in developing IP. A pilot phase has already demonstrated the potential to attract significant inward-investment with £13.5m project recently awarded to provide support in establishing over 200 opportunities (including 25+ major projects) over the next 5 years up to 2020.

Cycle Store / Bike Racks
Thanks for your idea 'Bike Racks'. There is a Cycle Store located on the Ground Floor at City Campus which accommodates 315 bikes. If you study at Riverside Campus, there are 200 external bike racks. Please contact reception if you are not sure where these are located.
